Background
One of the outstanding features of Concordia's B. Ed. (After Degree) Program is the pre-service teaching portfolio that a graduate prepares for presentation to future employers. Portfolios prepared by graduates from Concordia have been sited by employing jurisdictions as exceptional exemplars of the high quality of graduating teachers from the program. Students have come to expect that they will be provided the opportunity to prepare a portfolio and that it will be of the high calibre that will distinguish them from others entering the profession.
Principles that guide the development of pre-service portfolios:
- Portfolios are included in the B. Ed. (After Degree) Program as part of the evidence to demonstrate that graduating students have met the Quality Teaching Standard of the Province of Alberta.
- Portfolio development is a "thread" running through all courses (including field experiences).
- Portfolio development is an activity that takes place over the entire (two years) program.
Framework for Pre-Service Teaching Portfolio
The Knowledge, Skills and Attributes (KSA's) included in Alberta Learning's Quality Standards for Teacher Certification are included in one or more of the following topics. These topics provide a framework for the pre-service portfolio. As the portfolio is developed they become "chapters" in a showcase of a teacher's best work. The Chapters are:
- My Expertise in a Subject Discipline
- My Strategies to Teach to a Variety of Learning Styles and Individual Needs
- My Long-, Medium- and Short-term Planning
- I Create a Positive Classroom Environment
- I Apply Technology in the Classroom
- I Assess and Evaluate my Students
- I Work with Partners in the School, Home and Community
- I am Committed to Career-long Learning
