Education 502: Advanced Planning in the Elementary School

3 credits
3 weeks - 3 hours per day, 5 days per week

In this course students examine the principles of program design and then design programs for the elementary school classroom to which students are assigned in Education 532. These planning principles include the background of the elementary school-aged student, the requirements of Alberta Learning, the structure of the subject area, and the complexities of the classroom.

Education 532: Field Experience in the Elementary School III

9 credits
9 weeks - 5 full days per week

This course requires students to gradually assume full-day responsibility for an elementary school classroom over a graduated and directed period of time. Under the supervision of a certified teacher student teachers practice the roles which teachers assume with respect to their own students, parents and other members of a staff. Students are assigned to a school and a cooperating teacher.

Education 542: Reflections on Field Experience III (Seminar)

3 credits
10 weeks - 3 hours per week

This seminar examines the issues students encounter in the schools as part of Education 532, the solutions they tried, and the feedback they received from cooperating teachers. Students will gain insight into the specific characteristics and practices of effective teachers. This seminar runs concurrently with Education 532.

YEAR TWO: SEMESTER II - Integration

Students demonstrate, through their synthesis of ideas and experiences, the creativity, ingenuity, and insight needed to solve contemporary educational problems. Each student will be expected to design a lifelong approach to professional development.

Education 503: Planning and Integration of Technology in the Elementary School

3 credits
Lab: 12 weeks

Effective teaching methodologies combined with communication and technology processes for productivity are the emphasis of Education 503. Students will utilize computer productivity processes to combine their knowledge of program/classroom methodologies with technology. This course is a combination lecture and computer laboratory experience.

Education 521: Literature and Literacy for Elementary School

3 credits
12 weeks

This course examines a wide variety of genres of literature written for children, and introduces students to trends and issues in language arts education. Students gain a practical and theoretical orientation to ways of using children's literature to teach reading and writing across the curriculum in primary and upper elementary classrooms.

Education 522: Mathematics Education for Primary and Upper Elementary School

3 credits
12 weeks

Students examine the Elementary School Mathematics Program goals and application of these goals to the design of programs for the elementary school. Students explore how children construct their own meanings and can use mathematics to solve everyday problems. Students design and implement mathematics programs suitable for an elementary school classroom.

Education 523: Science Education for Primary and Upper Elementary School

3 credits
12 weeks

Students examine the Elementary School Program and the two main areas of its emphasis: science inquiry and problem solving through technology. In science inquiry the focus is on asking questions and finding answers based on evidence; in problem solving through technology the focus is on practical tasks, finding ways to make and do things to meet a given need.

Education 524: Social Studies Education for Primary and Upper Elementary School

3 credits
12 weeks

Students gain a practical and theoretical orientation to the elementary school social studies curriculum.
